Feb 17, · Herbert Pepper was from Oubangui-Chari in French Equatorial Africa. He seems to have visited New York at Christmas to make these recordings. He believed that short gospel tracks destroyed the African element in black Christianity where dance, preaching and song were all parts of the same observance, so he wanted to make longer recordings.
